This week I have been spending some time in the computer lab when students rotate through there for "specials". Our county adopted to use Learning.com's EasyTech program to get students more proficient with digital literacy. With EasyTech teachers can go into their classroom accounts and assign tasks and lessons to their students. They can also just allow the teacher in the computer lab to assign lessons or allow the program to plan the students progress. The program is a self-paced way for students to learn digital literacy skills such as keyboarding and word processing. They are also exposed to lesson on digital citizenship as well as skills for online research. They are also presented with coding practice and discussion with problems to better develop computational thinking.
I have also gathered all the data from the needs assessment for the school I will be doing the face-to-face PD. I was able to get 19 teachers to submit answers to the needs assessment. That is a good number but I have been told that the entire faculty may still attend the PD. I have not put the data into a concise form yet but it appears that they have strength in creating documents and assessments. However, there has been a push from our county to get students more involved in online testing to better prepare them for Georgia Milestones. Some grade levels will have no choice but to take the test online, others may not this year but we are told eventually all grade levels will. All students K-12 and teachers in the county were given Google Apps for Education accounts at the beginning of the year. I have discovered through conversations and looking at the needs assessment that most teachers have not set up their accounts let alone signing their students up. I spoke with the principal at RSE and he agrees a great PD would be to show teachers how to set up online quizzes for their students. This would give them courage to begin using it more and have them move in a direction of using the online platform as well as Google Classrooms.
I had begun putting together the class, but had a few concerns so I posted a discussion about this on the practicum class site. I got good direction and answers but had to restart what I had initially started. Note to self: ask before you start if you have questions next time ;).
