Continuing to piece together the artifacts for the portfolio.
This week had a few hours to visit with Shannon Moore at Harlem Middle School. She is the Media Specialist. This is her second year at HMS. I was able to talk with her about her duties there as well as look around at some of the different areas they have. Last year, she said she was able to do several PD opportunities for the school. This year they have a new principal and he has not yet shared a vision for where they should be going so she hasn't done any classes for teachers this year. She is also going out on maternity leave in the next couple of days but said I could come back and speak with her assistant if I needed to.
She said that right now she is mostly the gatherer of data and flows that down to teachers and students. She is the one directly in charge of Data Director (the school's benchmark testing software) and scans in and makes reports of the student data for the teachers. She also sets the students and staff up with Google Suites passwords and accounts. The county also has student accounts for Office 365 so she maintains those accounts for HMS as well.
Each grade level, 6-8th, have their own computer lab. She said that the 6th grade lab is the oldest and doesn't always operate the way it should so luckily she was able to find funding to get a computer cart of 30 Lenovo laptops just in case. Mostly the students only come in to check out books or reference material but if they need any assistance with how or where to research Mrs. Moore is the one who guides them. She also said that even though the technology is there to provide an electronic calendar for teachers to sign up for computer lab time, she found they didn't know how to use it and instead just uses paper calendars for sign up. Sounds like a good PD opportunity to me ;). Some of the previous PD that she conducted were on Mirror360 and the use of some new short-throw LED projectors they are using in classes.
This week I also contacted and spoke with the Technology Committee Chairman for Riverside Elementary where I will be doing the face to face training class. We spoke about some of the direction she feels the school wants to go but was unsure about exactly what they needed. I promised her I would do a needs assessment and let her distribute it to their teachers. I began working on the needs assessment and will get it finished ASAP so I can send that out.
